1. Children and technology

  • Technologies are very important to children who use them daily at home and school.
  • They enjoy online, hand-held and video games, children’s and other sites on the internet and most have email accounts or use a parent’s email account.
  • Some children have mobiles and enjoy texting more than voice calls.
  • At these ages, they are given some trust and responsibility for their use of technology and some children have their own computer or laptop.
  • Many children are skilled at using technologies and assist their parents with using the internet and computers.
  • Social networking sites are popular with some children and most enjoy video-sharing sites and downloading content.
  • Boys at these age levels are often more interested in games than girls, whilst girls enjoy the social networks they can access via the internet and mobile telephones.
  • Most children use the internet at school and for completing homework and for entertainment.

2. Children and social networking

  • Age-appropriate social networking sites are popular with some in this age group, particularly girls. Many children look forward to being able to create profiles on adult sites when they are older.
  • Children use mobiles and IM for social networking and consider that their social lives are greatly enriched through these technologies.
  • Some children are keen to build large numbers of ‘friends’, both known to them and unknown to obtain prestige amongst their peers.

3. Keeping safe and ethical

  • Children have a growing awareness of the importance of keeping safe and how to do it, mainly from advice from a parent or older sibling and school cybersafety programs.
  • Children are aware that they can seek support from parents, older siblings and trusted adults if they see something that makes them uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • They are becoming more aware of how important it is to keep personal information private and that virtual actions have real-life consequences.
  • Children are developing a sense of how to behave ethically on the internet.

4. The role of educators

  • How schools can develop cybersafety programs, policies and procedures for Upper primary children.
  • The importance of schools having cyberbullying programs, policies and codes of conduct ensuring that all students know what these are and how to seek support.
  • How schools can teach creatively using technology and what students need to know about technology and safe use at these age levels.
  • The importance of facilitating these older students in mentoring younger students.
  • How teachers and students can work together to create Codes of Conduct and policies.
  • The importance of creating a partnership between the school and parents in relation to technology use, policies and procedures.
