There are two video clips in this section that cover the themes of the videos with young people and a third that discusses the role of educators.
1. Children and technology

The computer they use is in a public space such as a family room.

Parents or older siblings often supervise them in their use of computers, the internet and games.

Children enjoy parents playing games with them and using the computer together.

Some families have rules about computer use, including the time spent online and what sites are allowed to be accessed.

Children enjoy online, hand-held and video games, children’s sites on the internet and finding things using web browsers. Some children use email accounts supervised by an adult.

Children are gaining skills in judging real from fabricated content, but often still lack the ability to judge the trustworthiness of content.

Age-appropriate social networking sites are popular with some in this age group, particularly girls, and many children access music and video sharing sites.

Most children use the internet for school work and for information as well as for entertainment.
2. Keeping safe and ethical

Children are not fully aware of how to keep themselves safe on the internet.

Most children are aware that they can seek support from parents, older siblings and trusted adults if they see something that makes them uncomfortable or unsafe. However, some older siblings may introduce younger siblings to content that is not age-appropriate

Children start to learn safety skills such as reporting inappropriate content to a trusted adult.

Children have very little understanding of how to keep themselves private on the internet.

They may lack an understanding of online ethical choices and behaviour.
