Digital media literacy
Online symbols
This unit aims to help students to:
- understand that symbols are used to communicate or represent ideas
- become familiar with symbols commonly used online
- recognise avatars as online constructs that can help protect their identity.

This unit aims to help students to:
- assess the authenticity of websites
- identify and develop a critical awareness of the purpose of commercial content online
Appropriate online content
This unit aims to help students to:
- develop the knowledge and skills to enable them to conduct effective online searches
- identify reliable and appropriate online content
- develop strategies to deal with unwanted or inappropriate content or contact.
Peer and personal safety

This unit aims to help students to:
- understand that online activities can have associated risks
- think critically about how they might protect themselves, their families and their computer while engaging in online activities
- understand that online identities, such as avatars, can protect them, but may be used by others to pretend to be something they are not.
Sharing personal information
This unit aims to help students to:
- recognise that personal information can be used to identify or locate them
- understand that personal information must only be shared appropriately and safely
- acknowledge that they must seek the help of a trusted adult when setting up online accounts/ profiles. identify what personal information is.

This unit of work aims to help students to:
- understand how online communication is similar to, but differs from, face-to-face communication
- acknowledge that the language used to communicate will vary depending on the audience
- develop kind and respectful online communication skills.
Cyberbullying
This unit of work aims to help students to:
- understand that bullying can take various forms
- recognise the different roles of people involved in bullying situations, especially bystanders
- acknowledge the effects of cyberbullying on the people involved
