Safer Internet Day 2012: Actions for Schools and Libraries

Knowledge is power! Understanding your digital environment is the first step to ensuring a safe and positive online experience.
Safer Internet day encourages schools and libraries to learn and connect together. Utilise Cybersmart's interactive activities and resources to take positive actions and teach each other about staying safe online.
Key messages
The key messages for schools and libraries this Safer Internet Day are:
- Talk about online safety – with your students and the school community
- Know about online privacy, so you can help others - check how to use privacy settings and update your software
- Educate others about the online world – check out the Cybersmart resources
Activities taking place on the day will be rolled out progressively until February, but the conversations and planning can start now.
Interactive activities
Cybersmart Hero and Cybersmart Networking are provided free of charge to schools nationally through the Australian Communications and Media Authority's Cybersmart program.
Interactive Shared Learning activities will be conducted on 7 February 2012 to coincide with Safer Internet Day and on Tuesday 21 February for Tasmanian schools.
Schools interested in participating are invited to register by contacting the Cybersafety Programs section on 1300 669 024 or isl@acma.gov.au
Schools can access these online learning activities by logging on through the internet from any location around Australia. Lesson plans, script information and instructions are available to schools after they have registered.
Multimedia Resources
Tagged - When a group of high-school friends post a rumour about a rival it sparks a chain reaction that leaves no one untouched. Cyberbullying, sexting, filmed fights and police action ensue — will these friends avoid being tagged forever?
Cybersmart Access is a set of games designed to reinforce cybersafety messages to children with special education needs. Each game is accompanied by units of work with engaging lessons and activities developed by special education needs educators.
Lesson plans
Safer Internet Day 2012 lesson plans provide straightforward and engaging activities for students that reinforce the importance of protecting privacy and digital reputation, and fostering good online etiquette. There are also tips for kids and teens to remember when using social networking sites.
Brochures and posters
Cybersmart brochures on common cybersafety issues, including cyberbulling, sexting, mobile phone safety and socialising on the internet will help teachers to discuss cybersafety with parents and other members of staff.
You can also order these free resources online or by telephoning the Cybersafety Contact Centre on 1800 880 176.
